Below the eastern ridge of Mount Ida lies hidden in the bush an old mining site. Commodities sought after in the 1930’s and 40’s were silver, lead, zinc, gold and platinum. John Thornton, a local miner owned several claims on Mt. Ida. He lived and died at this site in a cabin. His body was buried in one of the mine shafts, marked by a white wooden cross.
